The
process of Turbo Coding or forward data error correction was created
during the early 1990s when French design engineers sought to overcome
the corrupting effects of bandwidth noise on digital communications. I
believe that this process was adopted and implemented by Motorola, hence
the trademark name “MOTOTRBO” or just “TRBO.” Whether there was any
collaboration between Motorola and the French would seem likely. It
would be interesting to know if Motorola made any improvements to the
turbo fwd. error correction process. I had a strong suspicion that the
suffix “TRBO” used by Motorola was more than just a slick ad man’s
catchphrase.
